The Whitman Sisters

I found the article on The Whitman sisters very insightful and interesting. Starting from humble childhoods with a father who did not want them performing outside of the church setting, their story is definitely a success. They were able to overcome all the difficulties of the time that black artists faced and managed to start their own company that had over twenty members. Despite being black, they managed to draw both white and black crowds and win accolades for various performances like best tap dancing.

What I also found interesting was the effort the sisters put into trying to make the playing field equal for all artists no matter their race or gender. For example, Mabel championed desegregation in the theatre and the rights of black patrons and performers. It is amazing that in some situations, like the Chicago theatre, her goal was achieved after just four years. In yet another instance of fighting for her rights, Mabel threatened Theatre managers about cancelling her group’s performance if they did not get paid. This went a long way in getting the word out there that black artists and women in particular will not the exploited easily.

I found the Whitman sisters as role models who upcoming artists should try and emulate. They managed to overcome various difficulties and succeed in life. In addition, their success did not stop them from continuing to push for the rights of those who were still being persecuted for being a different race or gender.
