Response to The Whitman Sisters

The Whitman Sisters were people who clearly understood how to keep the balance between being successful and still having something to say that challenged many views that we still hold.
The article mentions the idea that identity is nor fixed, opposite to the idea that we hold. We tend to think that what we are is what we've got and that we need to learn how to live with those limitations. They did not believe that, and had to courage to show their disagreement to the world.
They challenged the ideas of gender and race that, in our society, are the two things that cause the biggest discussion. Through dance, they were able to show to the public that the notions of gender and race that we strongly hold are no more than cultural constructions that have been imposed upon us and thus, can be destroyed.
Their work had echo among black and white people, by gently suggesting different and revolutionary ideas.
After the complementary discussion we had in class, is what evident that there are still many other taboos that we still have to break done, as the one of which is the perfect body that a ballerina should have.
The Whitman Sisters had taught us that it is possible to challenge this views without necessarily putting audiences in an uncomfortable position that will not gain anything.
