Christianity and Black Dance

The assigned article for this week discusses interesting issues regarding the how Black slaves fought against Christian impositions to keep their dances.
Christianity is based on the body-mind dichotomy, thus everything that is considered as sacred has two go through the mind and the soul, letting the body out of the equation.
On the other hand, we have a culture, Black culture, that thinks of dance as a junction of body and mind. Dance is their way of expressing their spirituality.
Conflicts arouse from these very opposite views and new forms of dance developed in order the maintain the spirituality but keep their believes.
What I liked the most about the article is the strength and cleverness that Black slaves have always shown to maintain their culture and to be loyal to their roots.
The need that they feel to change and alternate their form of dances shows the importance that this activity had in their culture. Thanks to this changes nowadays we can enjoy interest fusions of white and black traditional dances in new forms. White societies have gained a lot through the unwanted, but inevitable, mix of cultures.
